Accurate Determination of Glacier Surface Velocity Fields with a DEM-Assisted Pixel-Tracking Technique from SAR Imagery

چکیده
We obtained accurate, detailed motion distribution of glaciers in Central Asia by applying digital elevation model (DEM) assisted pixel-tracking method to L-band synthetic aperture radar imagery. The paper firstly introduces and analyzes each component of the offset field briefly, and then describes the method used to efficiently and precisely compensate the topography-related offset caused by the large spatial baseline and rugged terrain with the help of DEM. The results indicate that the rugged topography not only forms the complex shapes of glaciers, but also affects the glacier velocity estimation, especially with large spatial baseline. The maximum velocity, 0.85 m∙d, was observed in the middle part on the Fedchenko Glacier, which is the world’s longest mountain glacier. The motion fluctuation on its main trunk is apparently influenced by mass flowing in from tributaries, as well as angles between tributaries and the main stream. The approach presented in this paper was proved to be highly appropriate for monitoring glacier motion and will provide valuable sensitive indicators of current and future climate change for environmental analysis.

Deriving Ice Motion Patterns in Mountainous Regions by Integrating the Intensity-Based Pixel-Tracking and Phase-Based D-InSAR and MAI Approaches: A Case Study of the Chongce Glacier
As a sensitive indicator of climate change, mountain glacier dynamics are of great concern, but the ice motion pattern of an entire glacier surface cannot be accurately and efficiently generated by the use of only phase-based or intensity-based methods with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. To derive the ice movement of the whole glacier surface with a high accuracy, an integrated approac...
متن کاملEstimation the Movement of Glacier in the West of China with ALOS PALSAR and PRISM Data
Glaciers are sensitive indicators of climate fluctuations. The effects of climate warming are for instance evident in the continuous retreat of glaciers. In the paper, the movement of the Dongkemadi Glacier in the Qinhai-Tibetan Plateau and the Keqicar Baxi glacier motion in the Tianshan Mountains of western China are measured using two-pass differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry ...
متن کاملA New Velocity Map for Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, from Sequential Aster Satellite Imagery
New ice-velocity measurements are obtained for the main trunk of Byrd Glacier, East Antarctica, using recently acquired Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) imagery. The velocities are derived from the application of a cross-correlation technique to sequential images acquired in 2000 and 2001. Images were co-registered and ortho-rectified with the aid of a digi...
متن کاملEstimation of Ice Flow Velocity of Calving Glaciers Using Sar Interferometry and Feature Tracking
Changes in velocity of the large outlet glaciers and ice streams in Antarctica are important for ice sheet mass balance and hence sea level. The ice flow velocity is also a critical variable in understanding glacier dynamics. Polar Record Glacier, with a calved iceberg in front, is about 50 km to the west of the Zhongshan Station, East Antarctica. SAR interferometry can detect the surface displ...
متن کاملDInSAR and Coherence Tracking Applied to Glaciology: The Example of Shirase Glacier
Within the framework of a research project carried out in collaboration with the Department of Geography of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), we have studied the contribution of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) phasimetry in the field of glaciology. The main objective of this research was to extract surface velocity fields for the Shirase glacier, a fast-flowing continental ice stream in Drau...
